THANKS AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE DRAMA DEPARTMENT, AND DRAMA TEACHER, GINGER MONTAGUE, for their fantastic Martin Luther King Tribute, on January 13, during 2nd period. ALL of the Art Department were represented, as well as a slide show by Peach Khan of the Leadership class.
Annual ELL Test
Our annual Washington Language Proficiency Testing (WLPT) window is scheduled for February 8 – March 5. According to state and federal guidelines, all English Language Learners must be assessed annually whether they are receiving direct services or not, until they reach proficiency. This test measures students' oral language, reading, and writing skills in English. Your child will be given the test in a group setting and/or individually at your child’s school during the school day by a trained staff member. The results will be sent to parents in June.
Prueba Anual de ELL [Spanish Translation]
Nuestra Prueba Anual de Habilidad de Idioma de Washington (WLPT) está programada para Febrero 8 - Marzo 5. Según las pautas estatales y federales, todos los Principiantes de Idioma inglés deben ser evaluados anualmente ya sea si reciben los servicios directos o no, hasta que ellos logren la habilidad. Esta prueba mide a los estudiantes las habilidades del idioma oral, lectura y la escritura en inglés. A su niño se le dará la prueba en grupo y/o individualmente en la escuela de su niño durante el día escolar por un empleado entrenado. Los resultados serán enviados a los padres en junio.

Attention Parents of Seniors:
The All-Night Senior Grad Party is an event that the senior class parents organize and is not a school-sponsored event. The goal is to provide a fun, safe, supervised, and sober graduation celebration with all-night entertainment.
The event takes place on the night of graduation beginning at about 10:00 p.m. with organized bus transportation picking up students, traveling to surprise destinations with entertainment, food, and music, and then returning them early in the morning of the following day. The party is designated as drug and alcohol free. For security reasons, no "in and out" privileges are extended.
How big an event, where it is held, and what is offered is totally up to US – the senior parents!
· Attend a meeting. (Held the first Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in Room 210A. Next Meeting: Feb. 1, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. in Room 210A at LHS)
· Support our ongoing fundraisers. (Currently selling Lindbergh logo jersey pants and flip-flops.)

GRAD NIGHT GENERAL FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES (For ALL Grad Night Committees)
Dealing for Dollars
West Coast Entertainment offers an opportunity to pay down the ticket price. They are in need of Blackjack Dealers for their party events this holiday season, and are willing to train Grad Night parents to work at these parties. For each night, you will receive a $50.00 credit, which will pay down your total ticket price. Kids 16 years and over can train with their parents/guardians.
The biggest benefit for participating in "Dealing for Dollars" is that you can have the entire ticket paid off, with no cost to you. Training is free. For example, one couple worked together at the holiday events. At $50 per person, per event, they paid off their child's ticket in just two events! PTA Reflections Update
We will honor our Reflections students, and their families, with a reception on Tuesday, February 2nd, 7:00pm, in the school library (immediately after the PTSA meeting). Please contact Linda Kawamura at tkawamu@msn.com, if you can attend, or for any questions.
There were 200 art entries from 12 local PTA units that qualified to compete at the PTA district level. The top 50 entries were displayed at the Reflections Award Ceremony held on 1/7/10.
Lindbergh had 9 entries this year. Four entries won and are going onto the PTA state level of competition, and one entry received honorable mention. The results are as follows:

We are in need of HELP with our concession table during the Winter Sports Season. The Winter Season entails Home Games/Meets for Girls and Boys Basketball. If you work a shift / game, you get in to that event for free. You must sign up prior to the event.

Reserving a Space at LHS

The school is utilizing the calendar at Highschoolsports.net for most events, and will also include it in there.
LHS After-School Tutorial
Lindbergh has after-school tutorial in the library, Monday –Thursday. Tutorial runs from 2:15 – 3:15. Student are to sign in when they come to tutorial, and sign out when they leave.
We vouch for them being at tutorial when their name is on the sign-in sheet. When they do not sign in, we cannot vouch for them being at tutorial.

COMMUNITY NEWS
The African Community Economic Development (ACED) is hosting a culturally relevant and responsive Youth Development Program which aims to assist students with SAT preparation, college essays, and homework tutoring for Math and Sciences. We have professional tutors with Bachelor’s Degree or better, who will mentor students and give them one-on-one help. Our Youth Development Program was created to enable the students to become leaders in their community, using individualized programs tailored to each student's needs.

Congratulations to all of our DECA qualifiers who will be attending the State competition early in March. There will be over 2,500 students at that conference. They will be competing to attend International convention in Louisville, Kentucky where there will be over 14,000 competitors! Here are our qualifiers: Victoria Carcillar, Preet Kaur, Alex. CLASS OF 2012 SPIRIT WEAR

TRAFFIC SAFETY CLASS NOW ENROLLING - class starts Jan. 23
We are currently enrolling students for the second semester Traffic Safety program. Classes will be held from 8:00 a.m. to approximately noon on Saturdays from Jan. 23 through June 12 at Sartori Education Center. Students 15-19 years of age may enroll. Payment of a $400 class fee is due at the time of registration. Students may pick up a registration form in the Main Office or find one online in the Career and Life Skills section of the Renton School District website.

IGNITE MENTORS AVAILABLE TO HELP - Tuesdays and Wednesdays
Are you struggling in any of your classes? Ignite mentors will be available in the library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school to help you with your homework. Freshmen! Please take advantage of this great opportunity to step up your GPA.
LUNCH TIME AREAS
Students, you may only be in the cafeteria, commons or library during lunch. You may not wander the halls or hang out by the mirrors. Lockers must be visited after lunch. Please remain in the proper location to avoid receiving detentions.
DETENTIONS
This is a reminder for students to check the detention lists posted around the building. A new list is posted by the end of each Tuesday afternoon (students will note a color change). Also remember that not serving detentions will result in an automatic assignment to Saturday school. Questions? Visit the Attendance Office.

Brave Weather to Help with 'Walk & Knock'

On Saturday, December 12, Lindbergh High School's Leadership class participated in a "Walk and Knock" Food Drive in local Fairwood neighborhoods, and the partnership with the communities was a success.
The results were impressive:
- 420 Pounds Collected
- 14 People Participated
- Two Hours Invested
Students knocked on doors in Fairwood Greens, Fairwood West and Pebble Cove Apartments to collect the non-perishible food and supplies that were donated to the Salvation Army's Renton Food Bank.
According to Lindbergh's Family & Consumer Sciences Teacher and ASB Advisor Christina Allen, students selected this form of food drive rather than the typical in-school student food drive for a dual reason.
"We chose the Walk n Knock method because we didn’t want to pressure students in such a tough economy and to involve the community," said Allen.
In addition to the Walk and Knock event, students engaged local businesses and organizations by placing donations boxes at Pebble Cove Apartments and the Fairwood Library, and some students collected goods from shoppers at Safeway during the two-hour activity.
Student Comments
Overall, students gained positive impressions with this type of food drive, and they hope the communities they visited also felt a sense of partnership through this effort. Student comments follow.
- Sarah Reiter: “It allowed everyone to participate; it was fun to see how much food we could collect.”
- Brenna Healy: “It was cold – My hands were numb, but the people were nice and gave us lots of food.”
- Tien Nguyen-Le: “The method [walk n knock] was new and I didn’t expect the community to be so open and involved. We were helping out the whole community with the drive, but we also got to connect with individual members.”
- Andrew Sadettanh: “It was cold, but you felt gratification when it was all over.”
- Adrian DeJesus: “I liked it.”
- James Cornell: “It was a really good thing for the community and needs to happen more often.”
- Elizabeth Leonard: “I had a lot of fun and I was helping people at the same time, which made it more fun!”

Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) students in Gene Kolczynski’s Business Education class at Lindbergh High School have started their 2nd annual Giving Tree program where 100 wrapped gifts will be purchased and distributed to local elementary schools. DECA student Adrian Villanueva is working with elementary principals and counselors at four schools to gather names of 25 students from each school for the gift-giving program.
Lindbergh High School offensive/defensive lineman Nick Anderson has been selected as one of four finalists for the National Football Foundation’s Scholar-Athlete Lineman of the Year Award. Nick, a senior, also named to first team offense by the Seattle Times, will learn if he’s the winner of the award on Dec. 13. The award comes with a $2,000 scholarship. Lindbergh head football coach Pat O'Grady nominated Anderson for the award based on his stellar athletic ability and leadership. [After the release of this article, Nick has officially won the Award.]
Lindbergh High School recently held its third annual Trades Fair to present students with information and options for future employment. Nearly all Lindbergh High students attended the event, along with groups of students from other district high schools and middle schools. Careers represented at the event included building trades, carpenters, engineers, land and water resources management, electricians and marine construction. Area community colleges presented information on cosmetology, medical and culinary programs. Students in the Culinary Arts program at Lindbergh provided lunch and snacks for those in attendance.
Lindbergh High School students in Natalie Kolczynski’s Careers in the Community class hosted a Health Fair for fourth- and fifth-graders at nearby Tiffany Park Elementary School. The Lindbergh students created presentations that relate to the district’s elementary school health curriculum and sets a good example for younger kids to lead a healthy lifestyle. Health Fair stations included dentistry, CPR, first aid, nutrition and exercise, anti-smoking, anti-drug, and careers in healthcare. The Health Fair also counted as a culminating project for high school seniors.

Governor’s proposed 2010 budget cuts deeper into education, services
State’s estimated $2.6 billion shortfall means further reductions for school district programs, staffing
January 14, 2010―Governor Chris Gregoire recently released her 2010 budget to balance a projected state shortfall of $2.6 billion. The governor is required by law to draft a balanced budget by the end of the calendar year using existing revenue.
The governor’s budget is estimated to cut about 8,000 teaching positions in the state and all funding for:
- all-day kindergarten for low-income families,
- preschool for 3-year-olds,
- gifted education (Discovery program in the Renton district), and
- and would cut funding that allows districts to lower class sizes in kindergarten through fourth grade.
Renton School District loss could total $4.3 million
Renton School District could lose as much as $4.3 million under the governor's proposal. Although it will not be clear how deep the cuts to the district’s budget will be until the Legislature and the governor adopt a budget expected in early spring, Renton Schools Superintendent Dr. Mary Alice Heuschel has begun work to prepare the district’s budget for next school year that includes the governor’s cuts. Every department and school budget is being audited to find efficiencies.

Nominations sought online for annual Ahead of the Class teacher appreciation awards
January 14, 2010—Local business leaders are looking for your help in recognizing Renton teachers as part of the annual Renton Chamber of Commerce "Ahead of the Class" awards.
Ahead of the Class award is truly a unique and wonderful opportunity to honor Renton teaching staff that work to nurture and prepare children for a productive future.
This year’s main sponsor for the award is the Seattle Seahawks.
Teachers selected will receive a cash award of $500 and be honored at a community gala on May 11, 7 p.m. at the Renton IKEA Performing Arts Center at Renton High School.

County funding to operate pool at Lindbergh runs out this year
2010 is first year district would have to find funds to operate pool at Lindbergh High. Funding the pool at Lindbergh High School will become the responsibility of the district this year. Even though the pool is located at Lindbergh High, it was, until recently, the property of King County. The pool at Hazen High School is district property, maintained and funded by the district.

Focus Day:
Thank you to Kathleen, Jerry, and Nick Sidwell (Dimmitt MS PTSA), and Jim Grossnickle (Hazelwood PTA) who joined Ray Kusumi, Maureen Monson, and Annie Hetzel, at PTA Legislative Focus Day in Olympia on January 18, 2010. There were over 800 PTA members and children there demanding that state government fulfills its paramount duty to fully fund public education. Governor Christine Gregoire and many Representatives addressed the crowd.
Our Renton delegation met with Marcie Maxwell of the 41st district and she tells us that legislators want to hear from all of you personally. The rally on the Capitol steps was covered briefly on the 5 o'clock news!
Even if you cannot go to Olympia, take a few minutes to pick up the phone and call or write a note to your Representatives and Senators. Tell them that cutting education hurts all kids!

Request for volunteers:
We have a math task that could be done by parents if we had some volunteers. In the elementary math program, there are (thick) books of unit by unit activity sheets and from each book, certain sheets need to be removed (to be used by another grade level). There are several hundred books which need pages pulled. I would need volunteers to come to the district office on the day(s) I set up and work until about 2:30. Depending on how many volunteers we get, it might not take more than one day.
